FATTORIA SEMIFONTE
If you want to relax
in the centre of Tuscany, among the green hills
of Chianti and surrounded by the wonderful landscapes,
you can do this in Petrognano.
The farm here is full
of vegetation and big valleys, so it’s
the ideal place to spend wonderful moments in
a pleasant unpolluted nature.
The surroundings is full
of woods, vineyards and cypress groves and ideal
for relaxing walks to find out Tuscany of the
past times, Tuscany of the country parish churches
and of Semifonte.
The farm is in the ancient
village from 1200 and has flats for 2 or 4 people.
The flats are far from the main street and are
independent and rural. The owners have also
restored them preserving the ancient characteristics
of the past.
The apartments have a
bath with shower, living-room with kitchenette,
one or two bedrooms. In the open air you’ll
have tables, chairs, large sunshades (private
or in common) so that you can enjoy the cool
of the summer evenings tasting a good glass
of Chianti.
If you don’t want
to cook, the restaurant is 300 meters far from
your apartments. You can go there on foot and
enjoy a meal among flowers, crystal glasses
and plates of pure china.
The village
of Petrognano is on the green hills and vineyards
round the street that takes to Certaldo from
Barberino.
It is a
group of old houses, but if we look better,
we’ll see stone towers with smart and finely
decorated arches: city houses with medieval
towers secluded in the countryside.
But that’s
not a mystery: Petrognano is the village that
belonged to a city called Semifonte.
Dante mentions
it in the 16th canto of the Divine Comedy and
he refers to its strong soldiers and wise craftsmen:
“Fiorenza fatti in là, Semifon diven
città”. The city was surrounded
by moats, barbicans, towers and very solid walls.
Now the
centre is no more there, it was razed to the
ground in 1202. After an epic siege and the
bloody final battle of that war, the city surrendered
and disappeared with its inhabitants who were
sent into exile.
In the farm
there’s the old parish church of Saint
Peter, then reduced to mere chapel. Inside there
is still the wood crucifix from the 12th century
that is now in the parish priest’s residence
in Certaldo. A stone with coat of arms is walled
up under the alter. This probably belonged to
a valorous defender of Semifonte.
